Midsummer is celebrated on the weekend closest to 24th June, as this is the longest day and shortest night. The original celebration of Midsummer comes from the Vikings, who celebrated the sun. In Britain Stone Henge is said to be a monument for midsummer and people congregate their every year.
To celebrate in some Scandinavian countries, people dance around a big pole stuck in the ground, called a Midsummer pole, decorated with flowers and birch leaves. Songs are sung while dancing around the Midsummer pole, the most famous song (probably because it is seen as very silly) is "Små grodorna", which translated means "The little frogs".
It is mostly families with children that sing songs, dance and so on. Most other people just eat the Midsummer food and help decorate the pole. On Midsummer, the most favoured dish is pickled herring with new potatoes and schnapps.
According to tradition, girls should pick 7 different kinds of flowers before they go to bed. If they put them under their pillow and sleep on them, they will dream of their future husband.
